Uber is safe and affordable
Rental cars are great as well as long as you’re comfortable driving on the other side of the road/car. South Africans drive on the left-hand side. Speed limits are in kilometers, and be careful to observe limits as fines are enforced - just ask The Groom :)
Avoid walking at night and just Uber

Cape Town is amazing — but like any big city, there are good areas and some not so good areas. By and large, if you stick to the areas and activities we’ve outlined, you should be absolutely worry-free, but If you are unsure at any point, please don’t hesitate to contact us. In general:
Avoid leaving valuables in sight (on tables, in back pockets) when in crowded areas
Stick to trusted transport (Ubers, hotel taxis, rental cars). Public transport is not recommended.
Don’t walk alone at night.
Be cautious when exploring unfamiliar neighborhoods
Beggars are mostly harmless, but stay vigilant when approached by strangers.
In case of emergency, dial 112 for police, fire, or medical assistance.
-
Most travelers do not require specific vaccinations, but check with your local healthcare provider a few weeks before to confirm there are no recommended vaccines for any areas you are planning to travel to (if venturing outside of South Africa).
-
The local currency is the South African Rand (ZAR). Most places will accept credit cards but it’s advisable to have some cash on hand for small purchases. Exchange rates vary but typically it’s 1 USD = 20 ZAR.
For tipping, it’s custom to tip around 10%. For exceptional service, 15-20%.
